A note from the Superintendent;

Dear Parents and Guardians,

I am writing to inform you about a new Oregon state policy regarding student use of personal electronic devices in schools. On July 2, 2025, Governor Tina Kotek signed Executive Order 25-09, which requires all Oregon school districts to adopt and implement policies restricting the use of personal electronic devices, including cell phones, smartwatches, and similar technology during the regular school day.

Key Details of the State Policy

  • Mandated Ban: All Oregon school districts must prohibit student use of personal electronic devices from the beginning to the end of instructional hours.

  • Timeline: Policies must be in place by October 31, 2025 and fully implemented by January 1, 2026.

  • Scope: This policy applies to all personal devices capable of accessing the internet outside of the school’s network.

  • Exceptions: Students who require access to devices for medical reasons or have an Individualized Education Program (IEP) that specifically calls for device use will be exempt.

  • District Flexibility: While the requirement is statewide, each district may decide how best to enforce and manage the ban.

KFCS Implementation

Klamath Falls City Schools developed district specific guidelines last year that comply with the law. This includes:

  • Establishing clear rules on how and where devices will be stored during the school day.

  • Determining consistent responses for violations of the policy.

KFCS carefully considered options that promote learning while maintaining practicality for students and staff.

Why This Change?

The intent of this policy is to create distraction-free classrooms where students can focus fully on learning and engage meaningfully with teachers and peers. Research and experience show that limiting device use during school improves student focus, reduces social pressures tied to social media, and helps prevent disruptions such as online bullying and inappropriate video sharing.

Thank you for your partnership as we work together to provide the best possible learning environment for all students.

Regards,

Exciting News for Klamath Learning Center and Klamath Home Learning Academy Families!

We’re thrilled to announce that starting this school year, Klamath Learning Center (KLC) and Klamath Home Learning Academy (KHLA) will be relocating to the Eagle Ridge New Tech High School (ERNTHS) campus.

This move brings several exciting improvements:

New Facilities: No more modular classrooms! Students will now enjoy learning in one of the newest buildings in the district, providing a safer and more comfortable environment for both students and staff.

Full-Time Counseling Services: KLC students will have access to a dedicated school counselor, helping with career planning, college prep, and more, just like other comprehensive high schools.

Continued Partnership with Klamath Works: Students will still have opportunities for off-site field trips and career exploration activities.

Transportation: We are working on providing transportation options for KLC students this year.

Expanded Meal Choices: We are working on offering a wider variety of breakfast and lunch options for students.

A big thank you to Eagle Ridge New Tech High School for welcoming our programs to their campus!

Please note, while KLC and ERNTHS will share the same building, they will remain entirely separate schools. KLC will occupy the north wing of the building, with dedicated entrances for our students and families.

To better serve the needs of our community, we are introducing an evening session in addition to our regular morning and afternoon blocks.

KLC had an incredibly successful 2024-2025 school year graduating a record 106 students. We are excited to continue supporting our students’ growth and success at our new location.

Important Reminder for Parents/Guardians: Please take a moment to update your 2025-2026 ParentVUE Registration by visiting www.kfalls.k12.or.us and selecting the "Registration" tab. For assistance, call (541) 884-7627.

We’re excited to kick off the year with a Back-to-School Meet and Greet BBQ on August 28th at 5:00 PM! After enjoying the BBQ, students and families can meet teachers and explore the new learning space. Homeschool students can also pick up Chromebooks at this time.

We can’t wait to see you soon!

What is the “Benadryl Challenge?”

sdfsdf

Primarily found social media platforms like TikTok, the “Benadryl challenge” encourages young people to take dangerous amounts of the over-the-counter (OTC) drug diphenhydramine (DHP), commonly found in products as Benadryl and other OTC medications.

The challenge urges viewers to take as many as 12 tablets at a time to supposedly induce hallucinations. For perspective, the maximum allowed dose in a 24-hour period is six tablets for children 6 to under 12 years of age and 12 tablets for adults and children over 12 years of age. Taking more than the recommended amount can lead to nausea, seizures or even death.

Following the report of an alleged overdose and death of one teen, as well as several reported hospitalizations, Benadryl maker Johnson & Johnson took action, issuing a warning about the challenge and working with social media platforms to remove harmful content. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) followed with a health warning about taking Benadryl at more than recommended doses. Several organizations partnered to educate parents and caregivers about the risks of online challenges and the importance of medication safety.
